What is the mission and vision of this SCDP ECHO Program?

Mission: To create a dynamic forum for frontline medical workers and public health professionals to connect with preparedness experts. We aim to engage in meaningful conversations and share evolving best practices for the purposes of advancing the field of infectious disease management and improving public health outcomes. 

Vision: To be a trusted leader in using an education platform where medical and public health professionals collaborate and share best practices, thereby enhancing regional, national, and global health security along with preparedness and response to emerging infections. 

What is Project ECHO?

Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) was started at the University of New Mexico in 2003, when Sanjeev Arora, M.D., a liver disease specialist, sought to bring improved care for patients with Hepatitis C across the state. Project ECHO is not typical "telemedicine", as it focuses on tele-mentoring, utilizing guided practice to train providers to care for their patients via the "All Teach, All Learn" model. Since 2003, numerous studies have proven the efficacy of the ECHO model. This outcome has led to the expansion of Project ECHO across sectors, with over 900 different programs addressing a range of health and educational issues.

Topics will focus on special pathogens, other infectious diseases, and vary by session - depending on current events.

Any healthcare or public health professional working with special pathogens or other infectious diseases is encouraged to attend - including doctors, nurses, paramedics, etc. No level of infectious disease experience is required. Some sessions' content will be targeted towards specific healthcare professionals; please review the list of upcoming sessions to register for sessions relevant to your practice.

ECHO sessions will roughly follow this format:

  • Welcome, intro, poll(s) (5 minutes)
  • Region IV situation report (5 minutes)
  • Case presentation (10 minutes)
  • Brief didactic presentation presented by guest expert (20 minutes)
    The topic of the didactic presentation will vary by session. To see upcoming didactic topics and register for sessions, please see our registration page.
  • Discussion forum and Q & A (15 minutes)
    Attendees may ask our panel of experts and fellow participants any questions they have related to the didactic presentation, specific cases, emerging trends, etc. This promotes "All Teach, All Learn."
  • Wrap-up and poll(s) (5 minutes)

Yes, we welcome participants to submit a challenging or interesting case that you would like to discuss at an upcoming ECHO session. Discussing cases fosters the "All Teach, All Learn" methodology. If you are interested in presenting a case, please send an email with a brief description of the case to scdp.echo@emory.edu.

All live sessions will be recorded and posted as a podcast episode afterwards. The presentation slides and any other relevant documents for the sessions will also be posted the week following the session. Please access past session resources.

EMS team

The SCDP ECHO Program includes a series of sessions focusing on the EMS specialty, which are made possible by a collaboration between SCDP and the Emergency Medicine Prehospital and Disaster Medicine Section. These sessions will focus on important special pathogen considerations relevant to the EMS community.Emergency responders, EMTs, Advanced EMTs, paramedics, nurses and physicians are encouraged to attend these sessions.
